WELCOME TO CRESPINA
Crespina is located in the Tyrrhenian part of Tuscany, in a quiet
area, spread over a succession of hills, not far from the sea and
the tourist towns of Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Siena.
An oasis of calm surrounded by the green Tuscan countryside, consisting
of woods and the beauty of nature, and dotted with old villas.
BRIEF HISTORY
The first document mentioning Crespina is dated 983. In this document
the bishop Tegrimo of Lucca gave Willelm of Willelm the possessions
of the parish of Atriana, with the tithes of Crespina and other places.
The Commune became autonomous in 1902, separating itself from the
Commune of Fauglia.
MONUMENTS AND TOURIST ITINERARIES
Crespina is famous for the Monument to the Little Owl (Athene
noctua) that is to be found in Borgo, in Piazza della Fiera delle
Civette. It is in bronze and is by the sculptor Angelo Biancini.
Its inauguration was held on 27 September 1970.
It is also famous for its villas, summer dwellings for the
rich landowners from Pisa and Leghorn, who in the course of past centuries
had chosen Crespina for its beauty and climate.
A place worth visiting is the Centre for Little Owl Breeding
devoted to breeding of owls in captivity. This has allowed them to
be brought back to compete in Piazza del Monumento, in occasion of
the annual Little Owl Fair, on 29 September, for Saint Michael's
Day, thus maintaining a centenary tradition that still attracts enthusiasts
and tourists from all over Italy.
The centre consists of various aviaries and itineraries in a large
park, interesting from an environmental and scientific viewpoint and
useful for getting to know local fauna, represented here by various
species.
Another interesting tourist itinerary is the Road of Wine of the
Hills of Pisa, winding through the municipal territory too, and
touching the wine farms in the area, marked with specific signs, amid
vineyards, cellars and the beauty of nature.
Valuable produce is represented by wine and oil, and the products
of greenhouse floriculture: indeed Crespina is an important
centre at international level, specialized mainly in the cultivation
of vines (sprigs) in the area of Cenaia, where each year in September
the Revue of wine and greenhouse floriculture is held.
There are frms specialized in the sectors of furniture and wrought
iron, and holiday farms, in continuous growth.
TYPICAL GASTRONOMY
The typical wines of the area are Chianti delle Colline Pisane
DOCG, Pisano white wine of San Torpè DOC and Toscano
IGT and they can be bought in various farms and cellars in
the area.
